No matter what type of plastic surgery you are considering to have, one of the most important factors for its success is the surgeon you choose. Although it is hard to believe, some of the doctors who are currently performing plastic surgeries had not had any type of official and formal surgical training.
We recommend you consider the following points before scheduling a consultation:
Find out if the surgeon is a regular or specialist member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery. Surgeons with this qualification have completed at least 5 years of surgical training after medical school, 2 years of General Surgery and 3 of Plastic Surgery. During this intensive program, surgeons learn to perform surgical procedures in all the body and face. At the same time, they develop their technical abilities and aesthetic judgment. After the training, the surgeon must be approved in written and verbal tests and curricular evaluation before getting the specialist certificate. This certificate can only be gotten from the Brazilian Society of Surgery Plastic and endorsed by the Brazilian Medical Association. Regular members are those surgeons who have demonstrated experience and dexterity in plastic surgery through work. They are able to give conferences and to be elected to some positions in the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery. This is the highest degree inside the Society and can only be granted after 2 years as a specialist member.
Ask about your surgeon’s privileges in Accredited Hospitals.
Even if you are planning to have your surgery in a specialized clinic or Day Hospital, it is important to know in which accredited hospitals your surgeon can operate. The accreditation commission in these hospitals usually evaluates the surgeon’s training and ability before accepting him or her.
